Katie and her co-worker Colleen Rudolph sold some of their artwork at the new Sculpture Gym space for an event called Coldhearted. And it is right down the street from Gravy! It is going to be another great addition to the neighborhood of artists.

And I just read the Philly Weekly article which tells the whole story about her amazing "Mattress Flip" photo. It is such a poignant article disussing the bigger issue of gun violence in Philly. Sometimes these kinds of stories slip through the cracks but Zoe's photos really help us understand the people involved and their struggles. They remind me of all the heartache people go through but also the hope that we can find in everyday life.

Super excited for FF in December. We will be featuring the work of Laura Graham http://www.lauragrahamart.com/work/. The show will run from Dec. 2 - 31.

Artist Statement

Laura Graham was raised in the grassy outskirts of Philadelphia by a pack of wild dogs. She enjoyed swimming in the fishpond, opening green coconuts with a butter knife and cooking. She pursued a BFA in painting and photography at Moore College of Art and Design, working as a photographer in Philadelphia, Boston and New Zealand before moving to New York to study acting.

Laura’s artistic endeavors have come to include directing as well as acting with her premier short film, The Orchard. She can also be seen in the award wining series, Pioneer One.

STRANGE OBSERVATIONS

“Strange Observations” is a collection of photographs from Philadelphia based photographer Jonathan Schimpf. The series focuses on peculiar happenings that occur both naturally in our world or that have been created/installed by man. Many of the ideas captured are a result of the artists love for odd simplicity and how we’ve used the resources around us to create something more. The images in this series that relate to humans or the work of humans tend to feel inspired by the natural world, even in the confines of a man made space. Each piece from this project has been photographed in various locations across the United States.

Jacob Pastrovich: I Still Don't Know Which Way To Go

Gravy Studio and Gallery is pleased to announce the upcoming exhibition I Still Don't Know Which Way To Go: Photographs From Eastern Europe by Philadelphia-based photographer Jacob Pastrovich. The opening reception will be held at the gallery on Friday, September 2nd from 6:30-10pm.

The exhibition consists of black and white photographs made by Pastrovich (b. 1985, Springfield, Ill.) while living in Budapest, Hungary and traveling around Eastern Europe from 2008-2009. The photographs—previously published as a book with the same name—have a raw, lo-fi quality that comes from the cameras he used to make them: Soviet-era point-and-shoots he picked up at a camera shop in Budapest after his other camera equipment malfunctioned.

Coupled with the subject matter—barely traveled city streets, never finished buildings on the Croatian coast, Halloweened kids in Transylvania—the gritty photos offer a glimpse into a purposefully lonely period in his life.

"In the back of my head I think I needed to be desperately isolated and these photographs are indicative of that feeling," says Pastrovich.

"I ate most my meals alone, I traveled alone, I walked unfamiliar streets alone in search of nothing. I'm still not sure if I ever found it."

JP Bevins was hard up for cash, so he got a job — but not just any job. For seven months, he worked on a traveling carnival. He steered enormous trucks around the country, set up rides at town fairs, and even lived inside a trailer that "divided into five, six little rooms, with a shower on each side." It was worth it, if only for a single photograph he shot while on the clock — Untitled, which captures a decades-long carnival worker named Eddie. He's wiry, wears a gold chain necklace, and has the word "High" tattooed on his knuckles. It looks like a gritty Zoe Strauss shot, if only she had grown up in a small town instead of South Philly. Many of Bevins' photographs in "20 Grand" are like this: character-driven, a little melancholy, "real." Bevins, who hails from rural Connecticut but now lives in Philadelphia, says his style is the result of an underprivileged childhood. "The aesthetic you gain from growing up poor, it's different," he explains. "You notice things that other people don't notice.
